This lesson has been done over and over again. I remember similar strategies from when I was a child. I give OWP, Oregon Writing Project, credit because they are the last ones to do it with me. Most teachers have some edition of this handy because it works. Give students a time limit and make it a contest. Don't give them time to over think what they are going to write down. If you are a writer don't give yourself time to over think it. Stick to just a few minutes and write. You can use this exercise over and over again by adapting it to your situation or classroom. Listen to each others lists and add to yours, often we have similar experiences. We will just remember them differently or from a different perspective.
For example:
Teachers- Have them write down everything they can remember about the last assembly, then turn that into a story.
Writers- Write down everything you can about your characters back story and then choose one piece of that to expand into a chapter.
The following are examples for part one of this assignment:

2) More to come soon
